REDLANDS annual koala count-a-thon is on again on the weekend of October 28 and 29.
Koala Action Group president Debbie Pointing said community members were asked to get out on the weekend to help find where koalas were living in our city.
“Koalas can still be found in most areas of the Redlands, including parks, bushland reserves, school grounds and backyards,” Ms Pointing said. “We’d like to hear from anyone who sees or hears a koala in their neighbourhood.
“This time of the year is perfect to spot koalas as they are most active between August and December for breeding season and their young are more visible as they are now big enough to be out of the mum’s pouch and can often be seen riding on mum’s back.
“Male koalas can be identified by a loud bellowing sound and a dark scent gland on their chest.”
Ms Pointing said while koalas were mostly seen in gum trees, they also could be found sheltering in other tree species like mango, casuarina and camphor Laurel, especially during hotter weather.
“KAG is looking for volunteers to search specific areas over the survey weekend,” she said. “Email or phone (3823 5575) if you are interested.”
Koala sightings and sounds can be reported to koalagroup.asn.au or redlnd.cc/koala-countathon
Koala numbers have crashed in the Redlands over the past two decades.
