Wet weather ensured no further play was possible in a number of games across the weekend, leaving many Tigers teams to walk away from the latest round of fixtures with a draw.
Fifth Grade two, the Lord’s Taverners and Shane Watson Cup sides, who had been frustrated by rain the week before, were greeted with warmer weather on Sunday that allowed them to take the field for the first time in two weeks.
Fifth Grade Two took on Valley in a 40-over game at Peter Burge Oval.
The Tigers restricted the opposition to just 132 runs thanks to some fine spells of bowling from the likes of Chris Barker, Wayne Todman and Matthew Fay, who each took three wickets.
Unfortunately for Redlands, they could not back up their superb efforts in the field with bat in hand. Club stalwart Wayne Todman (20) and Klinton Goodridge (18) fought hard to get the Tigers back in the contest following the loss of early wickets, but it was not quite enough to get them over the line.
Redlands were dismissed for 91 in the 35th over, 41 runs short of Valley’s total.
The Lord’s Taverners side, looking to build on the success they had against the Sunshine Coast recently, took on the Gold Coast away from home.
The Tigers bowlers were on fire early and had the opposition in a spot of bother when they claimed their fifth wicket with just 35 runs on the board, but a late order resurgence allowed Gold Coast to post a competitive 154.
Dale D’souza was the pick of the Tigers bowlers, claiming the impressive figures of 5-24 from just 7.3 overs.
Redlands battled hard with bat in hand during the afternoon, but were eventually dismissed for 79 in the 45th over.
Opener Jesse McDuff top scored with a handy 25 runs.
After weeks of trials and frustrating abandonments due to rain, the Redlands Shane Watson Cup side took on Western Suburbs in the first game of the regular season.
The Tigers were in control for much of their bowling innings after sending the opposition into bat, but a rearguard action from the opposition’s lower order batsmen allowed them to post a competitive score of 145.
Ben Thompson ran through Wests’ middle order with the ball to claim three wickets for 20, including a crucial late order wicket that stemmed the flow of runs, while Tom Biggs kept it tight throughout a 10 over spell that yielded two wickets.
Redlands chased down the total with relative ease when it came their time to bat.
At no stage did it look like the batsmen would falter, even if there were some hiccups in the form of run-outs along the way.
Damyn Waddups stood up at the top of the order to score a sublime 72 runs, while skipper Luke Jones saw the side over the line with an unbeaten 25 from his bat.
The Ray Weier Cup side is through to next weekend’s grand final after what has been a highly successful season.
