Several Tigers batsmen celebrated centuries on a steamy weekend of cricket that delivered a number of impressive one and two day victories.
First Grade were without Queensland players Marnus Labuschagne, Sam Heazlett and James Pierson, who were away on Sheffield Shield duty this weekend, but still managed to push their opposition to the brink. Ryan Leloux stepped up in the Bulls’ players absence to score 72, while Nick Hurford continued his splendid form to score 40. The Tigers tried hard with the ball, and created plenty of chances, but couldn’t defend their first innings score of 205. Ryan Leloux, who had earlier put the Ipswich bowlers to the sword, finished with the figures of 4/39. Redlands were 3/127 in the second innings when stumps were called with Sam Howse (50) and Liam Smith (45) the top scorers.
Second Grade upset a previously undefeated Ipswich/ Logan in a two-day clash away from home. Redlands piled on 416 runs in just 96 overs on day one thanks to twin hundreds from Josh Guy, who scored 144, and Jason Grosvenor, who scored 103. Jesse Burns also impressed on his second grade debut, scoring an unbeaten 58. The Tigers bowlers ran riot following a declaration from skipper Craig Weier, and managed to dismiss Ipswich/ Logan for just 119. Craig Weier, Ben Long, Josh Guy and Lachlan Honan all took two wickets.
Third Grade were also in the winners circle on Saturday after chasing down Ipswich/ Logan’s total of 174. Ravin Wijeyeratne was the chief destroyer for the Tigers, claiming five wickets, while Jason Hill chipped in with two. A classy innings of 91 from Craig Holdsworth, and 40 from Dylan Grey, saw the Tigers over the line.
Fourth Grade also trumped Ipswich/ Logan in a one-day clash on Fred Kratzman Oval. The Tigers were bowled out for 141 in the 34th over, but managed to go one better than their opposition with the ball in hand, restricting them to 136 and claiming victory in the final over. Matt Conwell (52) starred with the bat for Redlands, while Declan Mulheran (2 wickets) and Jacob Apted (3 wickets) did the damage with the ball.
Fifth Grade one defeated South Brisbane in a keenly contested and eventful one-day game away from home. Matt Short, on 5th grade debut, turned the match on its head with a consummate display of seam bowling. The young quick took 5/5 from seven overs to help dismiss South Brisbane for 176 before the batsmen chased down the runs with an over left in the bank. Matthew Williamson brought up his 2000th fifth grade run and raised his bat for a half century in the Tigers run chase, while Taylor Cue and Pearce Anderson chipped in with 33 and 32 crucial runs respectively.
Fifth Grade two defeated rivals Wynnum/Manly on Saturday to continue their climb up the ladder. Redlands posted 161 from their 40 overs thanks to unbeaten innings of 49 from debutant Isaiah Shepherd and 43 from Jay Kidley. The Tigers backed up their efforts with the bat when they took to the field. Klinton Goodridge, Jay Kildey, Chris Barker, Wayne Todman and Tom Knight all claimed two wickets to help bowl Wynnum out for 146.
Sixth Grade one continued their early season dominance against Wynnum/Manly two on Saturday to cement their spot at the top of the table. Redlands dismissed the opposition for a sub-par 103 thanks to a three-wicket haul from the ever-consistent Scott Butters, before Paul Bonney put pedal to the metal with the bat to score a quick-fire 81 from 33 balls. Bonney’s innings enabled the Tigers to chase down the required runs inside 11 overs.
Sixth Grade two went down to Northern Suburbs in a tough day at the office for the Redlands batsmen. The Tigers battled hard with the ball and eventually dismissed the opposition for 191, but fell short in the run chase. Will Read’s innings of 44 kept the Tigers innings afloat, but he was unable to find any support. Redlands were eventually dismissed for 96.
The Lord’s Taverners side also took on Northern Suburbs in a one-day game on home soil. The Tigers posted 125 after winning the toss and batting first thanks to some promising starts from Jayden Grant (25) and Dylan Kritzinger (21). Redlands had already tallied 50 runs after 5 overs, but a middle order collapse put a halt to the flow of runs. The opposition chased down the tigers total in the 25th over, with Gunnit Singh the only wicket taker.
The Shane Watson Cup side enjoyed their second win of the regular season in a high scoring affair away from home. The Tigers punished anything short and wide to post a mammoth 262 from their allotment of 50 overs. Damyn Waddups backed up his half-century in the season opener with a chanceless hundred, while Ben Thompson provided able support with 77. Despite a big total, the game went down to the wire. The University of Queensland were dismissed in the penultimate over when just 12 runs were required for victory. Shaun Love was the hero with the ball for Tigers and claimed the impressive figures of 4/46.
Redlands took on Gold Coast in the Ray Weier Cup 50 over final on Sunday. The game ebbed and flowed to the fall of the last wicket, but it was the Gold Coast who walked away with victory. A three-wicket haul from Luke Kuhz and tight spell from Nick Parrott restricted the opposition to 183. The Tigers lost two early wickets in the run chase before Luke Kuhz (33) and Keegan McClean (36) stabilized the innings. The lower order battled hard and heaped pressure on the opposition in the dying stages of the match and kept Redlands’ hopes alive, but it wasn’t enough to get the job done. The Tigers were dismissed for 142 in the 44th over.
The Redlands Tigers Jodie Fields Shield side went down in a closely fought encounter with Sunshine Coast away from home. The Tigers posted a competitive 8/183 from their allotment of 40 overs thanks to an innings of 30 from Sarah Lockhart, 26 from Hannah McLaughlin and 25 from Clodagh Ryall, but it wasn’t enough. The Sunshine Coast were 9 wickets down when they surpassed the Tigers total. Hannah Page (2/16) and Jesica Pang (2/22) did the damage with the ball for Redlands.
