VOLUNTEER Marine Rescue staff at Victoria Point hope there will not be too much more stumbling around in poor light at their local base.
Staff were thrilled to receive a Redland City councillor’s grant to upgrade lighting at the base and to buy equipment to help winch rescue boats.
Cr Lance Hewlett said it was rewarding to be able to assist VMR in the vital service they provided to the community.
He also thanked Cr Paul Golle who contributed to the grant.
Last month Redlands MP Matt McEachan called on Redland City Council to fix a broken light at the adjacent Victoria Point boat ramp as a matter of priority before someone was injured.
Mr McEachan said VMR had been asking for the light to be fixed since at least February last year.
“Everyone's sick of the blame shifting or the reasons something can’t be fixed. Let's just get it done,” he said.
A council spokeswoman said council had repaired the broken solar lighting last December but it had failed again and officers had been working with consultants to design new lights.
Marine Rescue Victoria Point was set up in 1982 and continues to develop crew skills and equipment which ensures staff are ready to help boaties.
The VMR base is near the northern ramp at Victoria Point with two rescue vessels, mainly operating between Cleveland and the Logan River
The base is manned on weekends and public holidays, with volunteer crews making up four rosters.
The base is always looking for new members and can be contacted on 3207 8717 or victoriapt@marinerescueqld
