Acting chief executive officer Kerri Long said the service, provided by qualified counsellor Jay Ellul, had been funded using some of a $130,000 donation given to the non-profit organisation by state government in May.
Ms Ellul began working at the centre earlier this week and can offer girls aged 12 and over and women free advice and referrals for extra support when needed.
While Ms Long said the service’s ongoing provision was subject to continued funding, she believed the need for it warranted support, including community sponsorship.
“We are hoping it will become a permanent service,” Ms Long said.
“The $130,000 has helped kick-off the program.
“The counselling service accepts self and agency referrals.”
Ms Long said donations were welcomed to help support Ms Ellul’s work.
The remainder of the state government handout has been used to improve the centre’s existing services.
Ms Long said a drop-in lounge for teen girls in years eight to 12 had also been rolled out, offering a “safe space” for teens to complete homework and make friends – the lounge is opened on Tuesdays between 3pm and 7pm.
