FEDERAL LNP MP Andrew Laming is cheekily buying into the state election, offering a holiday at Mooloolaba to social media users for the person who tells him the biggest thing that Labor state MP Don Brown had done in the past three years.
“I'll cover your oceanfront accom if you tell me the biggest thing DonBrownMP has personally done in three years,” he wrote on social media. “No entries received yet. Champers included.”
Mr Laming said Mr Brown was in deep electoral trouble, with his Capalaba seat targetted by One Nation.
“Polling from both sides now shows his primary vote at or around 31 per cent, a position from which it is near impossible to win, with One Nation likely to preference against sitting MPs,” Mr Laming said.
Mr Brown said if Mr Laming’s numbers were correct, it would mean that the LNP – from which many One Nation votes were shed – would be polling in the teens. This would be a disaster for the LNP.
It also likely would put the One Nation Capalaba vote above the minor party’s heartland in places like Lockyer Valley.
“This is a pathetic cheap stunt by Laming to buy votes,” he said. “...Take a quick look around Capalaba. You can't even find one One Nation sign or one volunteer.
“They aren't targeting here. It’s a purely fabricated story.”
Mr Brown said he took all opponents seriously, including One Nation.
Regardless, he was proud of his record of delivering more infrastructure, doctors and nurses as well as saving Birkdale's bushland and Alexandra Hills TAFE, just to name a few.
Mr Laming said history had never witnessed a government MP do nothing in three years “apart from announce state-wide grants that Redlands was getting regardless of who the MP was”.
“But we do have plenty that Mr Brown has attacked, like picketing our clubs, canning our prospective university site, killing every mining job on Straddie which he personally closed down with his motion in Parliament,” he said. “He almost killed off our locally-run Capalaba markets.”
Mr Brown said Redlanders had a choice between a stable Palaszczuk government, with a solid delivery record or a chaotic LNP-One Nation coalition.
“I’ve fought to restore Alex Hills TAFE after Tim Nicholls cut it to the bone, ready to sell off the land,” he said. “...I’m proud to say that after years of neglect by Brisbane City Council my advocacy has successfully secured a $30 million dollar upgrade to Rickertt Road intersection from council.”
He said he also was proud to have secured Redlands first 24-7 Critical Care Pod with six new critical care paramedics at Capalaba Ambulance Station to cut emergency travel times.
Political scientist Paul Williams said last week that One Nation had few prospects in urban seats but was polling strongly in regions like Lockyer.
Mr Laming said he would close his holiday competition on Monday, November 13.
