LABOR has promised to boost its Skilling Queenslanders for Work program which it says has already directly led to 289 people from the Redlands getting jobs.
Labor candidate for Redlands Kim Richards said she welcomed Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s commitment to fund the program by an extra $180 million, taking the total to $420 million by July 2021.
“In addition to the more than 11,000 jobs this program has delivered across Queensland, 2700 participants have gone on to further training while 420 more have returned to school,” she said.
“With this extra money, we will further target youth unemployment, fund local community-run programs and help employers grow their business.”
Ms Richards joined Health Minister Cameron Dick for the announcement when they visited The Cage Youth Foundation, which assists local youth to prepare for the transition into further education and training or into the workforce.
Ms Richards said Skilling Queenslanders for Work was axed by the previous government, depriving thousands of Queenslanders of the opportunity to get a job.
“Only a Palaszczuk government will fund the skills and training vital to getting people into the workforce,” she said.
Across Queensland, more than 11,000 people have jobs because of the Palaszczuk Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work program.
By 2020-21, the Government’s $420 million investment in Skilling Queenslanders for Work will support more than 50,000 jobseekers. That is 50,000 Queenslanders the LNP would abandon.
