Within nine months the grounds of Mary Street Childcare Centre has gone from sparse to overgrowing with a plethora of vibrant colours.
Sunflowers, carrots, spinach, capsicum and eggplants are just some of the vegetables children have a hand in planting and growing as a part of the centres goal to establish a ‘learning’ patch.
The garden has been a big project for Birkdale centre, according to director Abbie Levers.
“We had a bare garden bed and were wondering what to do with it; the idea came to move a fence and snow balled into what it is now,” she said.
“Now we have gardens that are easily accessible to the children.

“The children get to see and taste the results of their love and care. It has become a real community project with many of our plants donated by families, and even strawberries coming from the local farm,” she said.
The garden has gone a long way in teaching children about responsibility and sustainable living.
Mary Street Childcare Centre educators take great pride in teaching children through first hand experiences.
The hands-on experience of the garden is a chance to practice and refine the children’s skills in a safe environment. During younger years educators focus on developing independence, while during Kindergarten events are held to expose them to more experiences.
