SEE and hear what the Capalaba candidates have to say ahead of the Queeensland election on November 25.
Candidates are listed in the order their names will appear on the ballot.
Paul Taylor – One Nation
Leslie Harrison Dam: restore gates and open to recreation
Eastern Bus Way 2007/08 Peter Beattie / Anna Bligh: this was signed off and stands as another broken promise by Labor. I shall ask the tough questions - why was this promised and not delivered? I will pressure the government for this to be delivered. Capalaba needs this infrastructure now.
Queensland Rail – roster: we will fix this roster. This is well past a joke, it is embarrassing, costing us millions.
Mt Cotton Road – upgrade: duplicate Mount Cotton Road i.e. between Ney Road and Lyndon Road. (This is a car park during peak hour) from two lanes to four lanes. Cost $4 million.
Traffic lights – install pedestrian crossings: Mount Cotton Road and Moreton Bay Road intersection, Redland Bay Road and Moreton Bay Road intersection. So simple, reduces an eight minute trip down to two minutes.
iPads for Police - promised in 2014! I shall fast track this to ensure our police have the tools to stay ahead of the criminals. Labor put the brakes on it.
Labor / Greens “safe schools”: degendering of our kids in primary schools, extreme radical sex being taught with parents being kept in the dark. We will throw this out lock, stock and barrel.
Don Brown – Australian Labor Party’s incumbent member
It has been an honour serving the people of Capalaba for the last three years.
We have hired more nurses and doctors for Redlands Hospital, saved the Birkdale bushland and stopped the sale of Alexandra Hills TAFE, which now has over double the number of enrolled students at SkillsTech and we have invested over $2 million in upgrades to secure its future.
However, there is still more work to be done.
Only Labor has a plan to upgrade Old Cleveland Road and it is only Labor that has a plan to decrease travel times in cars, buses and trains.
Cross River rail will take thousands of cars off our roads by delivering services every 6 minutes during peak times and cut travel time by 14 minutes into the city.
We have also reduced the cost of public transport, saving the average public transport commuter $900 a year on their trip to work.
Cameron Leafe – LNP
Born and raised in Capalaba, my family has lived and worked in the local area for over 30 years.
I did my primary schooling at St Luke’s, and learnt the basics of business in the family’s powder coating workshop. After finishing my degree, I took the risk of starting my own business in software development.
My family has always been involved in small business. My dad still owns and operates a manufacturing business in the Redlands and he has taught me the values of honesty, ethics, respect and to work hard. These lessons have served me well while I’ve been building my own business.
Making sure we have a real economic plan to see us through the tough times is incredibly important to me.
As your Liberal National Party candidate for Capalaba, I am committed to fighting for more investment in our area so we can have reliable public transport, better roads, properly funded schools and healthcare.
We need to get tough on crime to keep drugs and criminals off our streets and make our community safer.
With your support at the upcoming state election, I will always fight for your interests and will do everything I can to build a better future for Capalaba and the Redlands.
Jason Lavender
The electorate of Capalaba deserves better than what it has endured over the last three years, so if like me, you want to see it moving forward, vibrant and provide a greater quality of life for you and your family, I ask you to stand with me!
As a true independent I will stand and fight for you on these five platforms and many more.
1) Transport infrastructure upgrades - full details online Redland City Bulletin, November 10, 2017;
2) Leslie Harrison Dam – such a waste of what was once a great asset to the area;
3) Greater public facilities – pro-active approach to plan for facilities that the electorate needs as it continues to grow;
4) Education - ensure our children gain the best educational experiences with the best resources;
5) Family quality of life – state government has a responsibility to do more in improving the overall quality of family life, not just now, but future proofing it also.
I would also love to hear issues that you are passionate about, that you believe will make our electorate great again.
Joshua Sanderson – The Greens
Quality, affordable housing for all Queenslanders is important to me. It's harder than ever to buy a home and too many Queenslanders are facing severe rental and mortgage stress. We want to build more public housing and make sure that everyone has a home.
Our democracy is being bought. It seems like the major parties act to benefit their donors and not our communities. I'm running on a platform of getting money out of politics - banning corporate donations and cash for access meetings with ministers. That should help our politicians govern for their constituents rather than their wealthy donors.
We want to make public transport better and more affordable. We want a bus every 10 minutes on major roads, $1 fares for adults and free travel for under 18s. The Capalaba busway needs to be completed.
This is all fully costed and achievable. Vote 1 Greens.
