A Queensland Scouts leader facing "extremely serious" child pornography charges has been kept behind bars after a magistrate ruled it was too risky to let him out.
Daniel Leslie Cooper, 38, fronted the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday morning, charged with nine child porn offences including possessing, distributing and using a carriage service to access.
The court heard the Deception Bay father, whose daughter no longer lived with him, faced "lengthy imprisonment" if convicted of the charges.
Defence lawyer Andrew George argued for his client to be released on bail, offering to submit to a ban on unsupervised contact with children and using the internet for anything other than work or banking.
He told the court his client had no criminal history and the alleged offences did not involve "contact" with any children.
Mr George also said the landscaper would not attempt to return to the Scouts, especially in light of any ban on spending time with children unsupervised.
But the presiding magistrate ruled the accused should remain behind bars, saying if allowed out he would pose an unacceptable risk of reoffending or endangering the community.
The court heard Mr Cooper lived with his long-term partner, who was now "fully aware" of his alleged offending, and her adult children.
The magistrate described the charges as "extremely serious" and the evidence against Mr Cooper as "strong".
"I am satisfied that should bail be granted there would be an unacceptable risk that you would commit other offences while on bail and/or endanger the welfare or safety of members of the community," he said.
Mr Cooper was remanded in custody, with his appearance not required when his case is heard again next month.
Scouts Queensland general manager Gavin Kelly said Mr Cooper was expelled from the Scouts as soon as police child-protection unit Taskforce Argos contacted him on Sunday.
He said the man was a venturer scout leader, working with children aged 15 to 18, and had only been with the organisation in the Moreton Bay area since October.
Mr Kelly said a regional leader was contacting parents and the issue would be addressed at the next section meeting.
"We will provide support towards our youth members who have been affected, if any," he said.
