LOCAL non-for- profit organisation, STAR Community Transport has been recognised for its service to the community in supporting the elderly, frail, and people with disabilities to enjoy an independent and healthy life.
STAR received the runner-up award for 2017 Community Transport of the Year.
STAR general manager Patsy Wilshire said the awards were announced at the Community Transport Organisation Conference dinner held at the Hunter Valley in NSW.
CTO is the peak industry body for members in the community transport sector operating in New South Wales and Queensland.
“We are proud to be recognised as one of the top three community transport organisations operating in NSW and Queensland,” ms Wilshire said.
“It is such an honour to be recognised amongst our peers.
“Much of the credit goes to our brilliant team – both staff and volunteers – who work tirelessly to ensure that everyone in our local communities has access to easy and affordable transport options.”
Redland City mayor Karen Williams said council had worked with STAR for more than 20 years.
“We’ve seen the organisation’s commitment to wellness in the community through its coordination of the Redland Disability Network on our behalf,” she said.
“STAR is a trusted local service provider which has shown it is dedicated to improving services in the Redlands.”
Earlier this year, STAR expanded operations to service Ipswich and suburbs in Logan and Gold Coast.
Ninety-six volunteer drivers provided 84,344 trips for the elderly and those with disabilities, including 32,132 medical and 40,030 social trips.
“Community transport is an invaluable component of a healthy, inclusive community,” Ms Wilshire said.
“Not only does it open doors to a wide range of social, cultural and educational activities for those who are transport disadvantaged but it also offers a huge opportunity for the rest of the community to get involved as volunteers.
“With the support of our team, we aim to offer our communities the best and most affordable community transport service.”
