If England have a target of angst in the form of unlikely Ashes provocateur Nathan Lyon, Peter Handscomb wants rival spinner Moeen Ali to feel the heat once the Ashes start in Brisbane on Thursday.
The Phoney War took a twist on Tuesday when Lyon, in an interview with English journalists, suggested players on the 2013-14 tour were petrified of Mitchell Johnson and that he wouldn't shed tears if a few careers were ended should another rout ensue.
Handscomb, still feeling his way in the Test team after being called up last home summer, was at arm's length from the drama but made sure Moeen was on notice as the England finger spinner tries to have an impact at the Gabba, a venue that has traditionally been a challenge for touring tweakers.
James Anderson and Stuart Broad will carry much of the load for the England attack, with Chris Woakes and Craig Overton as yet untested in the conditions. Getting to Moeen will be a way to ensure Joe Root has to put unwelcome overs into their legs, with Handscomb relishing the challenge.
"In Australia, it can be tough to bowl spin. Moeen can definitely be one we can go after a little bit to put pressure on their quicks to come back early and bowl longer spells," Handscomb said.
"We also know Moeen is a very good player and very smart because he can bat as well. He understands what batters are thinking. We've got to be calculated and careful but we'll try and get him if we can."
Handscomb will likely see plenty of the spinner from his spot at six and he uses his feet well against the slow bowlers. The Victorian won't be trying to belt Moeen out of the attack but does intend to make his overs expensive enough to force a change.
"Hopefully I'm still in when he's bowling. It will be good to face him. I will try and use my feet and do what I normally do with spin," he said.
"It doesn't necessarily mean I'll try and hit him over the top. I struggle to hit sixes at big grounds. If I can chip it that will be all right.
"Hitting it through the field and finding gaps on these big grounds is just as good. If we can work him around and milk him a little bit it will be ideal."
Handscomb's parents John and Pat were both born in England and most of his family remains on the other side of the world. While most of the extended clan want him to play well in a losing series, his mum and dad won't be wavering in their support.
"Both my parents are English. Dad was born in Cambridge and Mum south-west London. They both came over here 30-35 years ago, so they are well and truly Australian now.
"They will be backing me and the Australian team, that's for sure. [But] most of my family is in England. I am getting the well wishes of 'I hope you go well but I hope the rest of the team doesn't'. It's all in good fun."
Given the obvious connection, Handscomb said he couldn't wait to hear what the Barmy Army has in store as the summer unfolds.
"I hope they've got a song for me. I'll be disappointed if they don't. I want to see what they've got.
"The whole atmosphere and crowd is going to be awesome. I'm going to try and enjoy it."
