THE Redland latest world champion – triathlete Luke Harvey – has had his hard work recognised by Redland City Council.
Cr Karen Williams told today’s general council meeting that few people in the world would have been crowned a world champion and graduated from high school all in just two months.
“In the middle of studying for his year 12 exams at Victoria Point High School – what must have been one of the busiest times in his life – Luke took some time out to fly to Rotterdam where he won the 16 to 19 years age group in the ITU World Triathlon grand finals,” she said.
“Luke competes with the Sharks locally and over the years has accumulated an impressive collection of awards for his pool room including the Queensland Nissan State Series age and overall champion.”
Cr Williams said although the world champion crown was Mr Harvey’s biggest prize so far, it did not come easily, with illness hampering his preparation.
“Like a true Redlander Luke is a fighter and dug deep during the race,” she said.
Despite being kicked in the face and getting a bloody nose in the swim leg, he persevered coming home a world champion.
Cr Lance Hewlett said there were none prouder than Luke’s parents, Trevor and Megan.
