THE LNP has pledged to save volunteer marine rescue groups from paying expensive insurance premiums.
LNP Leader Tim Nicholls made the promise last week, which followed reports Volunteer Marine Rescue Queensland had been slugged a ten-fold increase in insurance excess fees for named events like Cyclone Debbie, along with hiked building insurance premiums
Mr Nicholls said a one-off emergency grant of $200,000 would be made available in disaster season should LNP win the balance of power at the state election on Saturday, November 25.
The promise was in addition to a pledged $1.23 million to be delivered across all Queensland VMR and Coast Guard squadrons.
“An LNP government will provide $25,000 to 25 VMR and 24 Coast Guard squadrons from Thursday Island to Currumbin, and all in between,” Mr Nicholls said.
“This is part of our dedicated $10 million Emergency Volunteer Fund to support Queenslanders who support us in times of emergency.”
The funding announcement followed Redlands MP Matt McEachan’s pledge for an LNP government to give $225,000 to Victoria Point VMR for the group’s planned jetty and pontoon.
Help for Victoria Point VMR was also promised by One Nation’s Redlands candidate Jason Quick who announced $3.4 million for the group.
