Aiden Blizzard eyes BBL contract extension

Blizzard will play for the ACT in his final hit-out before he goes into camp with the Sydney Thunder, against Penrith in the Sydney Twenty20 Cup at Howell Oval on Sunday.

All Cricket ACT senior and junior competitions were called off on Saturday due to a heavy downpour but a host of Canberra players will front up in Sydney.

Blizzard is entering the final season of his two-year deal with the Thunder and will join the team in camp on Thursday.

The 33-year-old has won five domestic Twenty20 titles - one with the Thunder in the revamped competition, three with Victoria and one with South Australia in the old state-based tournament.

But he battled to win a regular spot in the Thunder XI last season as he got just one game under his belt.

"I didn't get much airtime last year so we'll see what happens, obviously we've got some talented young players," Blizzard said.

"Personally I'd love to get out there and get amongst it but I'm not too sure what my role is for this year so we'll get there, see what happens, see what sort of form everyone is in and then go from there."

Blizzard isn't the only player with a point to prove in the ACT's final Sydney Twenty20 Cup clash with Ginninderra quick Cameron Suidgeest keen to put his name up in lights.

The tournament provides yet another opportunity for Canberra's most promising players alongside the Futures League, Regional Bash and NSW Country championships.

"It's a great opportunity for another one to pop their hand up and let the world know they're ready to roll and they want a spot in the Futures League," Blizzard said.

Blizzard has failed to fire so far in the Sydney Twenty20 Cup, posting scores of 4 and 1 in his two outings to date.

But Blizzard says "there's still plenty of cricket to go" before the season opener against cross-town rivals the Sydney Sixers on December 19.

The Cricket ACT general manager of high performance will then enjoy a homecoming of sorts when the Thunder host the Melbourne Renegades at Manuka Oval on January 24.

"It'd be nice to be out there in the middle rather than running cricket operations behind the scenes," Blizzard said.

"I'm looking forward to getting back, we'll hopefully sell the game out and it would be a great way to finish the tournament or prepare for the finals."

Meanwhile, former ACT Comets leg-spinner Mac Wright has been named in a Cricket Australia XI to take on England in an Ashes tour match.

Wright will look to do Australia a favour and dent the confidence of the tourists at Perth's Richardson Park from December 9-10, ahead of the third Ashes Test at the WACA Ground beginning on December 14.
