The Sheldon Tennis Centre recently hosted for the Redlands Special Olympics Tennis regional tournament.
The tournament attracted athletes in the South East Queensland region including players from the Redlands, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane West, Brisbane North and Moreton.
Special Olympics is the world’s largest sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities with more than 4.9 million athletes in 172 countries and attracting more than one million volunteers.
Performing well for the Redlands were Matthew Burge, John Faulkner, James Evans, William Evans and Aiden Bates.
Head coach of the Sheldon Tennis Centre Dean Toparis said he had hosted the Special Olympics in both Sydney and Brisbane for the past 17 years.
“My favourite part is seeing the joy it brings to athletes. Coaching the Special Olympics athletes is the most challenging and rewarding lesson for me each week,” he said.
