The holiday period is almost here and for many that means a trip away with the family. And that includes taking along our four-legged pals.
If you are thinking of taking your pets on holiday with you, or arranging for them to be cared for, there are a number of things you need to consider, according to Redland Bay vet Dr Deborah Webb.
The first thing you need to ensure regardless of your plans is that your pet is microchipped and your contact details, and the information on its ID collar, are up-to-date.

When travelling, especially interstate, you can rest assured that if your pet wanders off, someone who finds it will have the ability to unite you.
Secondly, you must ensure your pet is up-to-date with vaccinations, as well as flea, tick and worm treatments.
Travelling with pets
When traveling in the car your dog or cat should be restrained for safety to protect both them and yourself. Use a cargo barrier, cat carrier or seat belt attachment or harness to anchor your pet in place. This will stop them from moving around and distracting you, as well as protect them from serious injury in case of a crash or heavy breaking.
Vet Happiness recommends that if your pet isn’t comfortable with travel to try car training before hand to get them used to the movement and environment.
You can also consider purchasing sedative tablets to assist.
Just like a driver reviver stop ensure you take a pet break every two hours where they can walk around, relieve themselves and take a drink.
Kennels for the holidays
Boarding or at home care is a great option for those with pets that aren’t up for the journey, or can’t take our pets with us.
A cattery or kennel provides staff who are able to look after and play with your pet, as well as manage their health. All require your pet to be vaccinated and free from diseases which may affect others such as kennel cough.
