The Redlands Shane Watson team won the first flag of the season after defeating Sunshine Coast in a hard-fought grand final. Having won the toss Redlands elected to bowl on a batting friendly Sandgate wicket and restricted the opposition to 8/195. Tom Biggs was the pick of the bowlers collecting 4/30. In reply Redlands chased down the total with 5 overs in hand, finishing 7 wickets down. Tom Waters closed out the innings with 32 not out, clinching Redlands’ first piece of silverware for the season.
First and Second Grade played a two-day game across Saturday and Sunday against Sunshine Coast. All other grades competed in one-day games across the weekend.
First Grade occupied the crease for a day and half finishing 9/251. Liam Smith 99 from 364 balls exemplified patience, effectively batting Sunshine Coast out of the game. In reply Sunny Coast finished 8/147 for a draw, with Stimpson and Leloux collecting two wickets each. First Grade will begin their T20 campaign next weekend.
Second Grade lost first-innings to Sunshine Coast with a below par score of 117. Sunny Coast passed the total just three wickets down before the close of play Saturday. On Sunday Second Grade took six wickets in the first hour to dismiss Sunny Coast 9/192 (dec). A five-wicket haul to captain Craig Weier added some respectability to the weekend.
Third Grade lost their one-day game against University2 having been bowled out for 124. Uni chased down the total to finish 3/127.
Fourth Grade dominated West2 compiling 6/179 from their 40 overs. Craig Holdsworth continued his good form scored 63 runs, supported by Pearce Anderson (31) andAdam Pearson (29). The bowlers then turned up the heat dismissing the opposition for 100 from just 28 overs. Mitch Davis and Adam Pearson collected three wickets each.
The Sunday local derby was Redlands v Redlands for Fifth Grade. Redlands1 posted a formidable total of 210, with Mitch Jenson unbeaten on 79 while Jay Kildey took three wickets. The run chase began well with Patt McKerr scoring 65 but Redlands2 only managed 153 in reply. Matt Ford cleaned up the tail collecting 5/22 with an excellent display of leg spin bowling.
In the Sixth Grade Redlands v Redlands battle, Redlands1 led by Dom Castle bowled first and restricted Redlands2 to just 140 runs. Harry Short scored 52, while Harvey Friske finished with figures of 3/31. In reply Paul Bonney blasted 48 from 27 balls. With good support from Waddups, O’Shea and Conwell, Redlands1 finished 4/141 in the 26th over, winning comfortably.
