The Canberra Racing Club will host a Samara Johnson Memorial handicap in honour of the late picnic jockey.
Johnson died in a single-vehicle crash that also left her partner and Thoroughbred Park trainer Garry Kirkup seriously injured on December 3.
The Canberra Racing Club moved swiftly to honour Johnson and the racing community will pay a touching tribute in the 2000 metre Samara Johnson Memorial in race three at Thoroughbred Park on Sunday.
Tributes have flown in for the fallen jockey and injured trainer, and perhaps none more touching than that surrounding the Kirkup-trained Highly Geared at Rosehill Gardens last Saturday.
Jockey Rachel Hunt rode with a heavy heart as she paid tribute with a purple cap - Johnson's favourite colour - and silks with Johnson's named stitched into the leg.
Hunt lived next to Kirkup and Johnson while completing her jockey apprenticeship in Canberra, and moved to Sydney six months ago following the death of her best friend and Canberra track work rider Riharna Thomson.
The latest tribute comes less than six months after the Canberra Racing Club confirmed it would name a Black Opal Stakes day race the Riharna Thomson Bracelet.
