VP MAGIC Football Club are one step closer to building a clubhouse at Redland Bay after the group was granted a a trustee lease for a portion of Donald Road park.
The club were given $103,600 earlier this year by state government to build the base but needed Redland City Council to secure them the land.
Councillors on Wednesday, December 13 approved recommendations for a 240 sq m site to be leased to them for up to ten years.
The deal means the group can construct a modular clubhouse there, pending building and plumbing approvals.
Club president Adam Carmichael said he was delighted with the result and hoped the base would be set-up sometime next year.
“We are very pleased and very excited this decision has been made,” he said.
The club’s matches are played at both Donald Road and Sel Outridge parks, with the latter used for evening fixtures because of lighting there.
While Mr Carmichael said the club would eventually outgrow both parks, he believed the leased site was suitable for the interim.
The group, established four years ago, first used grounds at Victoria Point State primary and high schools before match relocation to both Donald Road and Sel Outridge parks.
Division six councillor Julie Talty said it was important a permanent base to be found for the club, which caters to growing numbers of junior players.
"This allows the group to put up a temporary club facility...to provide games,” she said.
“It is not a permanent fix to what is needed.”
The decision to grant the group a trustee lease for Donald Road park has come after council acquired 159 hectares along Heinemann Road at Mount Cotton in June for sports, recreation and conservation.
The site has not yet been developed.
