Tony McEvoy admits he took a punt on a couple of big colts during sales season earlier in the year, but he could be ready to cash in during Saturday's Inglis Nursery at Randwick.
Sanctimonious and Logan River arrive at Randwick for their early season target with a run under their belts at Sandown. Big, bold-actioned two-year-olds with a future.
"They have come through together and you are always expecting one to fall over but they have stood up to it really well," McEvoy said. "The heavy track probably didn't suit them at Sandown but they ran good races.
"When you see them they are big, imposing colts and they were like that at the sales. Some would have said they were too big but I took the punt that they had [already] done the majority of their growing when I bought them.
"They are a little bigger now but they have just turned into nice colts."
Even though Sanctimonious got the better of Logan River at Sandown as they finished second and third behind Written By, McEvoy is looking forward to the Snitzel colt getting on a dry track.
"The wet ground just dulled Logan River a bit and he didn't really handle it," McEvoy said. "It was the first time the other horse has beaten him and they have done a lot of work together.
"He is a big, strong colt and has a great action and is among the better two-year-olds I have."
The Nursery has been a good race with an eye to two-year-old group 1s, with Golden Slipper winners Mossfun??? and She Will Reign winning it as well as a Blue Diamond winner in Extreme Choice.
"This is a race you have to plan to be in, and that's why they had the run and they will be much better for it," McEvoy said.
"Sanctimonious was good at Sandown and has a lovely, big action, so Randwick is going to suit him but we are just a little bit disappointed with the draw."
McEvoy has had a good start to the juvenile season with three winners already and a remarkable 17 of his 26 runners finishing in the first three. McEvoy upgraded his bloodstock at last year's sales and is seeing the difference.
"We got Logan River at the right price but in the past he would have been a colt we thought was a bit out of range," McEvoy said.
"When you improve the quality of bloodstock you buy you can see it on the track and this year's two-year-olds are the best I have had in a number of years as a group.
"We just want to knock off a couple of these better races now."
McEvoy also has Crockett heading towards the Magic Millions and will run in the Phelan Ready Stakes at Doomben on Saturday.
"He is still doing a few things wrong but if he puts it together he is going to be very hard to beat," McEvoy said. "He is a work in progress that will get better with every run."
