CHRISTMAS shoppers have been evacuated from Target and Kmart at Capalaba Park Shopping Centre after the fire alarm was maliciously activated.
Capalaba police beat officer-in-charge Senior Constable Samantha Schofield said it was believed the alarm was activated to cause a distraction while property was stolen.
She said police would view CCTV footage as part of their investigation to search for those responsible.
False alarms can result in hefty fines.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson said a fire break glass alarm was activated about 1pm.
Senior Constable Schofield commended the quick response from firefighters and said the incident was resolved within about 15 to 20 minutes.
The alarms in Target and KMart are linked which triggered an evacuation in the two stores.
A shopper who called the Redland City Bulletin said they heard warning sounds before everyone was told to leave the store.
She said the centre was busy as people did their last minute Christmas shopping.
