A BRISBANE man is helping to unveil what lurks beneath Redlands waters in a series of videos recorded and upload to Youtube.
Matt Kelly’s latest catch, a large stonefish, was reeled up from the Raby Bay canals on Chistmas Eve.
Mr Kelly, 30, said he cast his line out using a children’s rod expecting to catch brim or flathead but instead hooked nature’s most poisonous fish.
“The stonefish did not fight at all,” he said. “It only kicked around when it was pulled in.”
After alerting neighbours swimming nearby of the find, he documented his catch on film.
“After hearing about the dangers of this fish, and how venomous it's spines are, I thought it was worth shooting this quick video,” he said.
January is the time of the year stonefish are often spotted in the city’s canals.
In 2016, two people were stung by the species off Masthead Drive, with one of the casualties requiring antivenin.
The incident prompted warnings from Redland City Council for people to wear shoes when entering canal waters.
