TRAFFIC lights have been turned on at the intersection of Mount Cotton Road and Sanctuary Drive at the Mount Cotton State School.
Member for Springwood Mick de Brenni said the $1.3 million upgrade was great news for drivers and the school community.
“This is a busy intersection, particularly around school pick-up and drop-off times, so the new signals will improve traffic management and the safety of all road users around the school,” Mr Bailey said.
“Mount Cotton Road is one of Redland’s busiest roads, carrying about 19,000 vehicles each day.
“Transport and Main Roads will be monitoring the traffic flows after the lights are switched on to ensure a smooth implementation.
“This is a vital upgrade and I was determined to make sure that this work was completed before the new school year began in 2018.
“I thank motorists and the local community for their patience while construction was underway.”
It’s hoped the lights make a big difference during school pick up and drop off times when traffic backs up dangerously from the school.
Some residents who live on Sanctuary Drive are opposed to the lights, saying it will slow out of hours movement at the intersection.
Mr de Brenni said the activation of the signals was a major milestone for the upgrade, with only minor landscaping and site clean-up works to be completed before school resumes.
The project’s funding was provided by the State Road Network Upgrade program, which aims to improve safety across Queensland’s road network.
