Originating in India, yoga is just as relevant today as it was many thousands of years ago.

Although initially practicing yoga was to experience spiritual enlightenment, today it forms the basis of most exercise and wellness regimens.

There are different styles of yoga from which to choose.

Finding the one that suits your lifestyle will make all the difference to your commitment.

Yoga can be done at home or in a class with an instructor.

Learning the correct poses takes time and doing this with a trained teacher is important.

Although it is thought of as being one of the most cost-effective and safest forms of exercise, it must be remembered that pushing your body beyond its limits could cause strain on joints and muscles.

If you are looking for a sweat-inducing class then try Hot or Bikram yoga. This involves being put through a series of 26 poses in a heated environment. It is essential you stay hydrated throughout.

Hatha yoga is a generic term for the postures in a general yoga class that achieves an all-round workout, Ashtanga and Vinyasa are similar and are known for their fluid, movement-intensive practices.

Iyengar is a meticulous style of yoga which focuses on alignment and the proper implementation of each pose.  Props, such as blocks and straps are used and you will notice an increase in heart rate.
