A BET to ask out gorgeous bar maiden Bev led to more than just a dinner date for Roy Withers – it also led to a lifelong love.
The Capalaba pair celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last month on December 30, proving the old adage “he who dares wins” true.
Roy first noticed Bev at a Sydney pub in 1964 after she was pointed out by a friend, who proclaimed “there’s something special about that girl” during a game of pool.
Roy boldly approached Bev to win a pound bet but ended up using the money to pay for their first date together – a dinner of lobster mornay.
Roy soon discovered Bev was exceptional, with the two married three years later in 1967.
Bev said the key to their marriage success was they remained mysterious to one another.
“We’re always finding (good) things out about each other,” she said.
Roy, a seasoned tennis player who has played former Australian champions including Mal Anderson, recalled when he uncovered a stash of trophies in Bev’s childhood bedroom.
He said he was delighted to find out she had been a prize-winning marching girl, saying Bev had the kept the wins a secret.
Bev said she hoped she and Roy would celebrate their 60th anniversary in a decade.
The couple have two children and one granddaughter together.
