REDLAND City Council is seeking help from residents to identify vandals who damaged Mount Cotton Park, pulling signs out, breaking children’s play equipment and a barbeque area and smashing glass.
Cr Julie Talty said vandalism and destruction of property was criminal behaviour.
“(It’s) distressing and upsetting to the community who have invested in parks and community amenities for all to enjoy,” she said.
“Council takes such antisocial and criminal behaviour extremely seriously and works with Queensland Police Service to identify and prosecute such offenders in public spaces.”
Cr Talty said if people saw or were aware of such activities, they should not intervene but take down as much detail as possible about the offenders and the incident and immediately call police.
“While there are regular patrols of parks and public spaces, the community are also the eyes and ears for reporting such behaviour and can do so most effectively by directly reporting the incident to the local police,” Cr Talty said.
“Although it is easy to focus on incidents of antisocial behaviour like the one from Tuesday night, it’s important to keep it in perspective.
“These matters are relatively rare and every day families enjoy our parks for activities and recreation.
“That said, every dollar that council is forced to spend repairing damage caused in such incidents, is a dollar that cannot go into positive community activities and upgraded equipment.”
