Brisbane set to shine for Australia Day long weekend

The city is expected to reach 31 degrees this weekend, slightly higher than the annual average temperature of 29.2, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

For those heading to the beach this weekend, the forecast is 31 degrees and partly cloudy for the Gold Coast and 29 degrees with a shower or two for the Sunshine Coast.

And if you are thinking about having a few drinks before going for a swim, you may want to think again.

Surf Lifesaving Queensland has warned beach-goers about the stupidity of swimming after drinking alcohol.

Brisbane recorded 10 to 20 millimetres of rain across the city in the early hours of Thursday and that was expected to continue over the weekend.

The humidity will rise in areas across western Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast hinterland as storms are expected over the weekend.

Bureau of Meteorologist forecaster Adams Woods has urged residents to check the forecast before making any plans this weekend.

"Just be advised to keep an eye on the radar over the weekend so you don't get caught out," he said.
