Ten electric golf carts have arrived at the Stradbroke Island Golf Club.
The carts signal a big year for the club and will enable the Stradbroke Ferries VMR Golf Classic on May 19.
The carts were transported by Stradbroke Ferries, the Club’s major sponsor for 2018.
The Stradbroke Ferries VMR Golf Classic is being held to raise money to support Stradbroke VMR which has just lost its major sponsor. The event is being supported by Stradbroke Ferries, the Redland Council, Sibelco and nearly every business on the Island.
“The whole community has come together to support our VMR,” Golf Club President Peter Turner said.
“The Straddie VMR is well worthy of our support and who knows, the next life they save may be your own.”
Later this year, the club will also host the first Pro Am Golf event to be held on the Island in more than 20 years. It will also host two music events, the first on May 26 and the second in December.
When the new carts are not being used for special events, they will be used to operate Eco Tours on the Golf Club’s lease hold.
Along with a rich variety of coastal heathland plants and animals, the club is home to a flock of glossy black cockatoos.
“We saw a chick in 2016 so there is at least one breeding pair within the flock” Club secretary and tour guide, Greg Grimmett said.
“As these endangered birds only breed every other year we are expecting a new chick or two to be sighted in spring this year.”
The electric carts were partly funded with a grant from The Community Gaming Fund.
