REDLAND City council is urging residents to make emergency preparations ahead of wild weather forecast to hit the region from later this week.
A tropical low near the Solomon Islands could turn into a cyclone, potentially bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds to parts of the state.
A council spokesman said residents could help protect their homes from flooding by making sandbags.
Sandbagging stations will be set up across the Redlands from 10am to 6pm on both Tuesday, March 13 and Wednesday, March 14.
Sand, sand bags and shovels will be supplied and enclosed shoes must be worn.
The spokesman said residents could make up to eight sandbags each, which could be used to secure plastic sheets near doors and other crevices.
He said authorities were monitoring the tropical low closely and encouraged residents to keep alert to weather warnings.
The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted the system could approach the central or southern Queensland coast by Wednesday or Thursday.
Even if it did not develop into a cyclone, the state’s southern coast would likely be battered by large waves.
“At this stage, (the system) is considered likely to remain offshore,” a BOM statement read.
