A $28 MILLION upgrade to Green Camp Road will address congestion on the Rickertt Road thoroughfare from the Redlands, according to MP Andrew Laming.
Designs released by Brisbane City Council on Thursday show improvements to intersections at Rickertt and Tilley roads and road widening of Green Camp Road between Rickertt and Manly roads.
Mr Laming said the federal government had contributed $10 million for the road works, to begin after the Commonwealth Games. The remainder is funded by Brisbane City Council.
He said traffic modelling had found the upgrade would relieve significant congestion on Rickertt Road until 2031.
“The modelling shows there is no delay caused by the single-laned Rickertt Road,” Mr Laming said.
“This project addresses the delays that are experienced. There is no additional work that we could do on Rickertt Road that could make traffic move faster than it does.”
Mr Laming said he expected the work to begin in May and be finished about a year later.
“There will be some disruption to motorists but surprisingly little for the scale of the project,” he said.
A diversion will be in place on Tilley Road, at the intersection with Green Camp Road, for about three months.
A section of Tilley Road will be closed for three months during construction.
Brisbane City Council infrastructure chairwoman Cr Amanda Cooper said the upgrade would tackle traffic congestion while catering for future growth.
“This will increase capacity for the corridor, which is already choked with traffic during peak periods, and cut travel times by around 50 per cent in the morning and 35 per cent in the afternoon,” she said.
Brisbane’s Cr Adrian Schrinner said the project would address serious safety concerns along the stretch.
“Fifty-seven crashes have occurred along the corridor over the past seven years, with 46 crashes requiring medical treatment or hospitalisation,” he said.
The design includes fauna exclusion fencing, underpasses, rope crossings and glider poles, together with wilderness awareness signage.
Bonner MP Ross Vasta said the projet would mean a safer trip for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
