Carmel College Year 9 students Liam Adam, Carlin Carruth and Kyle Bennett are officially the funniest teens in the country, after snagging the title at the International Melbourne Comedy festival at the Forum Theatre on April 20.
The boys made it to the Melbourne national grand final as wildcards in the class clowns competition.
In March, the boys competed in the State final of Class Clowns at the Powerhouse, theming their performance on awkward school situations. Although the boys did not win on the day, they were a crowd favourite, something which stood up at the national titles.
Carlin's mother Roxanne Carruth said the experience had opened her son’s eyes to performance and entertainment.
“He had been entertaining the idea of becoming an architect, but he has had his eyes opened to the theatre. We have a quote in our lounge room from Victor Borge which says that laughter is the shortest distance between two people. I trust he carries this with him in his life moving forward. It certainly breaks boundaries and distances. It always feels good to have a laugh,” Ms Carruth said.
Mrs Carruth said she felt “incredibly proud” of her son and impressed by how the three boys came together.
“A dash of humour will lift any situation,” she said.
College curriculum leader for the arts Rebecca Meale said that well known artists Tom Ballad and Joel Creasy launched their comedy career through this competition, but “funnily enough” didn’t win.
