A CLEVELAND sporting field is being used as a refuelling station for helicopters deployed to help bushfire containment at North Stradbroke Island.
Video footage has been submitted to Redland City Bulletin showing a chopper land at Henry Ziegenfusz Park along Fitzroy Street, with a fuel tanker parked nearby.
Water-bombing helicopters are being used to help douse the bushfire burning at North Stradbroke Island’s Eighteen Mile Swamp, which was ignited by lightning on Wednesday.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advised Straddie residents earlier today to keep alert to the situation, with containment efforts continued ahead of forecast hot temperatures across the weekend.
The mercury is tipped to reach 33 degrees by Sunday, with very high fire dangers expected to continue as a heatwave expands across most of the state.
A council spokesperson said backburning efforts for containment were also focused on protecting powerlines.
Two generators were sent to the island earlier today by Energex in case of emergency blackouts caused by the fire.
North Stradbroke Island residents were encouraged to attend a township meeting at Dunwich Community Hall, 6 Ballow Road, from 3pm on Friday for updates.
