WHEN Mary Ross and Jacob Nelson teamed up they bowled everyone over.
But it wasn't their 70-year age difference that stopped people in their tracks, it was their winning prowess on the lawn bowls green.
The pairing rolled on to being a top combination when the dynamic duo won this year's State Mixed Pairs Lawn Bowls Championship at the Broadbeach Bowls Club this month.
Mrs Ross, 84, and Jacob, 14, won the first three games in their section before winning the finals against Jenny Blencowe from Geebung Bowls Club and Keith Donaldson from Hamilton Bowls Club 25 - 7.
To get into the finals, the unlikely pair played the winners of the state's eight zones, competing against teams from as far north as Cairns and as far west as Longreach.
The coupling kicked off in January when they won the Mixed Pairs at Cleveland Bowls Club before winning the District Pairs competition in June.
The duo said they had a day to practise before the State Mixed Pairs after effortlessly rolling through club, district and zone group competitions. A large group of supporters from Cleveland Bowls Club, where Jacob's father Greg Nelson is president, attended to cheer on the popular pair.
"Jacob decided to pair up with Mary because he had watched her play and respected her," Mr Nelson said.
"They both decided to give it a go, which just goes to show what can be achieved if people think (outside the square)."
This year Jacob's won the State singles titles and the Pink Rivers Classic, which has never been done before in the same year.
