The heavy rain that led into the weekend may have washed out many events across South East Queensland, but it did not dampen the spirits of the more than 500 people who turned out in Cleveland for the annual Cancer Council Relay for Life fundraiser.
The 18-hour event, which involved teams of up to 15 people keeping a baton moving in a relay style walk or run overnight, raised funds for Cancer Council Queensland’s work in cancer research, education and patient support programs.
The local Relay for Life this year kicked off at Norm Price Park, Cleveland Showgrounds at 3pm on Saturday, May 2, and saw Cancer Council Queensland staff, volunteers and more than 33 teams engage in an evening and night of fun and festivities before the event closed at 9am on Sunday.
A candlelight ceremony, in which participants remembered and paid tribute to loved ones they had lost to cancer, was also held.
