Even rain and high winds didn’t stop players and spectators from attending the 36th annual Howeston Pro-Am.
Held at the Howeston Golf Course in Birkdale on Thursday, Queensland’s second oldest pro-am attracted almost 100 amateur golfers and about 70 professionals who competed for $11,000 in prize money.
Among the professional golfers was host of Foxtel Sports Channel’s The Golf Show Ossie Moore.
Mr Moore said the Howeston Pro-Am was “great fun”.
“There are three or four really difficult holes out there,” he said.
“You really have to suck it up to play those holes.
“There’s the ‘Bermuda Triangle’ – holes five, six and seven – and then the 13th.
“If you can play those four holes you can actually get around with a good score, but you have to suck it up.”
Lyn Weston, who owns the course with her husband Bill, said the event went well.
“Despite the weather, we had a good turnout and it was a happy occasion,” she said.
The Howeston course has been operating for 43 years.
Owned by Lynn and Bill Weston, with their children and now grandchildren involved in the business, the golf course was established from dairy farmland in 1972 by Lynn's parents, Jack and Kath Howard.
The pro-am began in 1980 and has attracted some great golfers over the years, including Ian Baker-Finch, who carded a par 70 in 1980.
Others who have teed off in the pro-am over the decades are Terry Price, Randall Vines and Rodger Davis.
The pro-am has also attracted golfers from New Zealand, the South Pacific, Japan and other Asian countries.
Winners’ names and scores for the 2015 pro-am are still to be announced.
