North Stradbroke Island surfer Ethan Ewing is set to take out the Australasian junior surfing title after an event at Kiama this weekend.
Ewing is currently first in the Australasian rankings with 4560 points ahead of Quinn Bruce with 2700 points.
World Surf League’s Australasia tour and communications manager Will Hayden-Smith said Ewing basically has to show up on the weekend and make a heat to win the title.
“Ethan Ewing is emerging as the next big thing in Australian surfing,” he said.
“We are in the process of making plans to announce him as the series winner at the next event.”
The 17-year-old Point Lookout local has won four Pro Junior events and one in the Qualifying Series this year.
Speaking to the Bulletin from home ahead of the Kiama event, Ewing said the series win would get him into the world championships early in 2017 and be a big stepping stone for his career.
He said that winning the second event he surfed in this year helped his confidence.
“When I have good confidence, I surf better,” he said.
Hayden-Smith said Ewing’s performance had been the “most dominant” on the WSL Australasia Pro Junior Series since Owen Wright.
Most recently, the former Cleveland District State High School student won a junior event in South Australia on March 19.
In the international rankings for the men’s qualifying series, Ewing was ranked 30th at the time of going to press.
After Kiama Ewing will surf in Qualifying Series events around the world, including in the Caribbean and Bali.
