COMMUNITY spirit was evident over the weekend as teams ran in the 48-hour Run for Redlands events and the Koala Fun Run on Sunday.
The weekend of activities kicked off at noon on Friday and relays, entertainment, fun runs, movies under the stars and a gala dinner.
Member of the organising committee Corina Bailey said five teams participated in the 48-hour challenge, including a team from the Redland Bay SES, which was a beneficiary of this year’s event. The other beneficiary was the paediatrics ward at Redland Hospital.
Ms Bailey said the good weather helped to ensure the success of the event, which was held on the Ern Dowling Sportsfields in Victoria Point.
Run for Redlands is supported by Bayside Runners and Walkers, who also participated in the 48-hour challenge.
More than 300 runners joined in the Koala Fun Run events on Sunday. These consisted of a half marathon and five and 10 kilometre runs. About 60 kids enjoyed shorter fun runs.
The crowds at the Koala Fun Run on Sunday were entertained by various performances including Redlands Rhapsody choirs, Leah Lever, Industrie 1, Ebony Curnette, Alexa Curtis and Jess Beggins.
Ms Bailey said a highlight on Sunday was the services challenge involving a women’s and a men’s team from Redland Bay SES and an Emergency Services cadets team.
The teams participated in novelty events including egg and spoon and wheelbarrow races.
Primary and high schools also held challenges on Friday afternoon.
Olympic gold medallist Steven Bradbury was the guest speaker at the Run for Redlands Gala dinner on Friday evening. Held at the Sharks Sporting Club, the dinner was attended by about 100 people.
Families brought their picnic blankets to enjoy watching Boxtrolls and Oddballs on the big screen under the stars on Saturday evening.
