SURF lifesavers have set up a nippers program for Redlands kids which is being run out of Raby Bay.
The Raby Bay Little Lifesavers program has quickly turned into a fun day at the beach for families and their nippers.
Surf Life Saving Queensland coordinator Sarah Hesse said there were still plenty of places available.
“It lasts two hours and the parents often sit up under a tree,’’ she said. “It’s a pretty nice morning.’’
The program runs for from 8am on Saturday’s on the Raby Bay foreshore and a school holiday program also has been organised.
It costs $20 for the little lifesavers for a session and the organisation has compulsory long-sleeved rash shirts for sale at $30.
Ms Hesse said 12 nippers were enrolled in the course which was helped by calm conditions at Raby Bay.
There was plenty of room for more nippers.
“We usually get about 40 kids on the school holidays,’’ she said. “We ask parents to stay while the kids are there and there is a coffee van nearby.
“We take kids from five to 13.’’
Ms Hesse said little lifesavers were taught beach sprints, flag races, wading, rescue techniques and CPR.
They also were taught to paddle on nipper boards and use rescue tubes.
Saturday morning lessons would run until December 3 and restart in the new year.
Ms Hesse said people could come to Raby Bay to learn about the event or enroll on-line.
