ST JAMES Lutheran Kindergarten children have been cooking up a storm in the kitchen without having to pretend.
Teacher Karen Mavin said it was all thanks to a new oven, which was paid for with dollars raised by church members, parents and the community.
Baked goods are not only enjoyed at special occasions, but in class – Ms Mavin said the learning benefits stewed-up by cooking were significant.
The simple act of making a cake presents not only opportunities for turn-taking, but also food investigations and lessons on nutrition, volume and weight.
“We can sit down to talk about recipes and quantities and whether foods are healthy foods or sometimes foods,” Ms Mavin said.
She said eggs laid by the kindergarten’s chickens were also used in cooking, which helped children understand
“The generous contributions from the church members, people of the public and families from St James Lutheran Community Kindergarten have allowed the children to incorporate cooking into their program,” Ms Mavin said.
