CLEVELAND’S “eat street” style outdoor food markets are expected to open by the end of the year.
Redland City Council has given proponent Colin Mason of Chef’s Inc a four-year licence to operate the business, which will be based at a car park behind the library. The proposal has been opposed by businesses who argue that restaurants already under stress will be ruined.
Redland City Council mayor Karen Williams said the licence was granted to provide certainty for the operator.
“Four years is a reasonable period to allow these food markets to have any real impact on revitalising the civic centre and contributing towards a more vibrant and prosperous CBD,” she said.
“These projects require time to establish themselves to build broader interest, which will in turn encourage event organisers and other investors to consider Cleveland as a location of choice.”
Cr Peter Mitchell acknowledged concerns about car parking, noise and potential impacts on businesses.
“Council (has) strict conditions in place ... so it doesn’t impact existing nearby businesses or residents.”
