Futsal continues to take strides in Queensland, with the second edition of the SEQ Futsal Premier League (SEQFPL) set for kick off for 2017.
A 10-game home and away season will begin in October, culminating in a mid-December Finals Series.
The SEQFPL will see six clubs field teams across junior, youth and senior competitions.
Redland City Futsal will compete against other emerging futsal clubs such as Peninsula, Arana United and Bundaberg Wildcats and also the established powerhouse teams from the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.
Director of Coaching Andy Greenland is looking forward to taking the next step this season as a club and being competitive across all age groups.
“We made the semi-finals in four age groups last year and were unlucky in the U16 Boys final to lose 3 – 1 to the Sunshine Coast Wave,” Greenland said.
“As a club, we have all the ingredients to be one of the most successful futsal clubs in the league.
“There is definitely more interest in futsal this year in our region with our SEQ teams made up of players from the various football clubs and divisions in the Redlands and surrounding areas.
“I am most excited to be fielding U15, U17 and Open Women’s teams this year and will be helping them to show the league how talented our girls are,” he said.
Football Queensland Futsal Administrator Trevor Edwards believes the competition will continue to elevate the game’s status in Queensland.
“I’m excited about the SEQFPL and the opportunity it provides Futsal players to compete at a high level throughout the summer season,” Edwards said.
“We continue to see the game grow in Queensland and this is another great step forward,” he said.
The SEQFPL complements the Futsal State Titles in strengthening Queensland’s pathways to the FFA Futsal National Championships.
“We are looking forward to a successful season and hope that we get lots of support during our home games,” Edwards said.
“Futsal is so fast paced with heaps of action and shots on goal. How could you not watch it,” he said.
The SEQFPL will feature a focus on junior development underpinning senior competitions. SEQFPL clubs will field teams in the following age groups:
- Male: U12, U14, U16, Youth (17-19) and Open Men
- Female: U15, U17 and Open Women
The tournament starts Saturday September 30 away to the Gold Coast.
