BIRKDALE couple Henk and Gerda Bakker have celebrated their diamond anniversary – 60 years – of marriage.
Daughter Debbie Madsen said her mum and dad migrated separately in their late teens with their families from Holland.
“They met at a dance at the German Club in Brisbane in 1955,” Ms Madsen said. “It was love at first sight and have been together ever since.
“Mum and Dad courted for a year, were engaged a year later and were married on 28th September, 1957.
“Mum was a brilliant seamstress and made her own wedding dress along with the bridesmaids.”
Henk and Gerda have three daughters – Debbie, Carla and Tracey – seven grandchildren and one great grandson.
Their first family home was at Runcorn on Brisbane’s soutside.
They then moved to MacGregor and in December last year moved into the Prins Willem Dutch Retirement Village at Birkdale.
“Mum and Dad have always had very strong family values and love having their family around them who they cherish, sharing Christmas, birthdays and any other special family occasions together,” Ms Madsen said.
“They also enjoy socializing with friends, dancing and travelling.
“Soccer has always been part of the family, with Dad being a soccer nut and mum being a soccer widow.”
Ms Madsen said it was a joy to celebrate her parent’s 60th wedding anniversary, their wonderful life together and their fond memories.
It was hoped they would have many more special years together.
