Redlands have made a stellar start across the grades on a rain-drenched weekend of cricket.
First grade had a field day against local rivals Wynnum-Manly in the first day of their two-day clash away from home. Redlands piled on 359 runs for the loss of just six wickets thanks to a maiden Tigers first grade hundred from Stuey Edgar. Michael Herdman (63), Nick Hurford (61) and Steven Moss (37) all joined in on the act to put Redlands in a commanding position at the close of play.
Second grade are also in a strong position thanks to some exquisite bowling from the ever consistent Leonard Watt, who bagged five wickets, and Lachlan Honan, who claimed three. Redlands are 4-56 in reply to Wynnum’s 194 and require a further 139 runs for victory at Peter Burge Oval next Saturday.
Third grade bowler Ben Long has put Redlands in a good position heading into day two after his seven wickets reduced Wynnum-Manly to just 130 in the first innings. The Tigers require 102 runs to claim victory next weekend and will start the day with the score on 3-29. Fourth grade are 7-166 against Wynnum-Manly at the close of an attritional day’s play on Fred Kratzman Oval. Craig Holdsworth top scored with 40, while skipper Anthony Lewis (38*) and Mitch Davis (23*) fought hard in the evening session to push Redlands towards a competitive first innings score.
Fifth grade one will need to fight back from 7-31 to claim first innings points against Western Suburbs next weekend. The Tigers started well with the ball after sending the opposition in to bat, dismissing them for just 109 after Josh Thompson and Jacob Apted ran riot to claim three wickets each.
Redlands were unable to capatalise on their strong position in the evening session though, and will require a rearguard action to walk away with victory. No play was possible in Sunday’s game between Fifth grade two and Valley. Both sides will return to Peter Burge Oval next weekend for a 40-over game.
Sixth grade one ran rampant with bat and ball to claim first innings points against Wynnum-Manly one. Scott Butters and Matthew Dwyer were the chief destroyers for Redlands and helped their side dismiss the opposition for just 25 in the 24th over of the day’s play. Redlands then posted 9-155 declared thanks to an undefeated captain’s knock of 55 from Dom Cassell and 58 from Chris O’Shea.
At stumps, the opposition are 1-15 with Redlands requiring a further nine wickets to claim an outright victory next weekend. Sixth Grade two were dismissed for 169 in the first innings and have the opposition 2 down for 32 at the close of play in what promises to be a tight contest. Stephan Muller led the way for Redlands with a finely made 48, while Greg Morton continued his stellar run with 43. Ed Little has both wickets so far for Redlands and will be required next weekend, as will the other Redlands bowlers, to roll through the South Brisbane batting order to claim first innings points.
Sunday’s poor weather saw play in the Lord’s Taverners Competition, Shane Waston Cup, Ray Weier Cup and Jodie Fields Shield abandoned.
