A COMMANDING nine metre high mural is going up at the Cleveland Library.
It’s part of the Quandamooka Festival and is called dabilbahnba, meaning place of saltwater.
Local artist Shara Delaney said the project was a learning curve for her because it was the first time one of her works has been reproduced on such a large scale.
She said she had produced one long mural before, a 15 metre effort at Guardian Angels Catholic Primary School, Wynnum.
Working with her is artist Matthew Newkirk.
He said he had done substantial outdoor work with youth groups as well as exhibiting at galleries.
He was helping paint the mural and particularly advising Ms Delaney on how to convert her original scaled-down work onto a much larger format.
Ms Delaney said the work represented three Indigenous clan groups.
“These are represented by the three circles and the blue is the water in between,” she said.
“It’s the first time I’ve used so much spray paint.”
Ms Delaney’s mum, Sandra, is also involved in the work, with Deb Mostert and project curator Craig Flood.
Sandra, who created the initial design, said it depicted Kabul and Warrajamba, ancestral beings who represent the spirituality and energy associated with saltwater, fresh water and land.
Dabilbahnba is a Quandamooka Festival project partnered by QYAC and the Creative Arts Redlands’ Public Art Program of council.
Mr Newkirk said it was hoped to have the mural finished by the end of the week.
