An online appeal set up to support an Olympian and his young son, who lost their wife and mother in last week’s horror head-on crash at Milton, has raised more than $92,000 in just a few hours.
Hamid Mobarrez, 36, an Olympian for Iran and the head swimming coach at an all-girls private school in eastern Sydney, was driving with his wife, Tamara, and their five-year-old son, Eli, when their Subaru was involved in a crash with a Volvo on Matron Porter Drive about 3.50pm on Thursday.
Mrs Mobarrez, 36, was unable to be revived and died at the scene. Mr Mobarrez and Eli sustained serious injuries.
A GoFundMe page, set up by Swimming NSW to help cover the cost of Mr Mobarrez and Eli’s recovery, had raised more than $92,000 by early on Sunday afternoon.
“Hamid has trained so many of our children to be strong, both in the water and out,” the organisation’s fundraising appeal said.
“Let's all pull together and do what we can to help.”
In a statement, the organisation said the crash occurred “near Mollymook where Hamid was conducting a camp for his swimmers”.
The Volvo driver, a 39-year-old man from Narrawallee, suffered minor injuries.
The man was released from hospital on Saturday and charged with multiple offences, including dangerous driving occasioning death.
He was given bail and will appear at Sutherland Local Court on February 20.
