ABOUT 18 firefighting recruits are needed to join North Stradbroke Island’s three auxiliary stations.
Casual hours are offered, along with certificate training.
Cleveland command Acting Inspector Tim Clark said community-minded people were sought for the job, which required weekly training and on-call availability for emergency response.
“Supporting our community – that is what we are about,” he said.
“The positions aren’t voluntary as they are paid but it has the same ethos.”
He said applicants would need to pass basic fitness and literacy tests, be aged 18 or over and both live and work within a short distance from their nearest station.
Acting Inspector Clark said applicants needed to pass basic literacy and fitness tests for entry but would be offered ongoing training opportunities, delivered through Queensland Fire and Emergency Services.
While recruits must complete a certificate II in public safety for firefighting and emergency operations, certificates III and IV are optional.
“Certificate II is compulsory and the others are with rank progression when positions are available,” Acting Inspector Clark said.
Helping to extinguish fires is a key job requirement but auxiliary firefighters are also needed in other situations, including road crashes, vehicle entrapments, chemical spills and rescues.
Acting inspector Clark said those interested could find out more by attending an auxiliary firefighter training session.
Training is held every Tuesday from 5pm to 8pm at Amity Point, Dunwich and Point Lookout auxillary stations.
