A CAMPAIGN run by Wellington Point Rotary and publicised in Redland City Bulletin to collect bras for a third-world community has turned out a smashing success.
Organiser Di Thompson thought the group might be able to collect 300 to 400 bras to send to Vanuatu, a poor Pacific nation which has been hard hit by cyclones.
Instead Ms Thompson said Cleveland bra store Secrets for Women had been swamped with more than 3000 bras.
“By any assessment this was a huge success,” she said.
“The generosity of local residents has been breathtaking and Therese Thorp, the owner of Secrets for Women in Cleveland, where many of the bras have been dropped off, says people are still bringing them in two months later.
“Some have been delivered to Vanuatu but due to the large numbers it will take some time to get them all over there and delivered to new homes.
“The SHaRM Foundation, a group of willing expats, who are coordinating the distribution on Efate Island, say the bras have been a hit everywhere they have gone as the women are very poor and could not afford such luxuries so it is really nice to do this.”
Ms Thorp, who is known for her generosity, said the shop was still taking bras and they could be dropped off at the corner of Bloomfield and Queen Streets, just along from Rafferty’s coffee shop.
