Every day, Kirsty Hill, 21, of Birkdale spends 20-40 minutes on her victory hair roll and another 20 minutes getting the right 1950’s look and heads to work as a body piercer at Off Your Tree in the Queen Street mall.
On March 11, she will fit right in as she joins for the first time Pinups on Parade, a fashion feature of the Redlands Rockabilly Revival being staged at the Cleveland Showgrounds from 10am to 5pm on March 11.
Ms Hill said she dresses in rockabilly style 80 per cent of the time, only occasionally swapping her skirts and patterned dresses for a pair of jeans and a t-shirt.
“I like the era. It’s not just about the way you dress. It’s the mannerisms and the way people spoke and conducted themselves in the 1950s. There was no loud mouth ruckus and lots of old fashioned values. I like that. I like the table manners and speaking well to each other. I’m all about that,” she said.
The former Birkdale South and Wellington Point High school student said she occasionally “dulled it down” when she went out with friends, but usually kept the style in some small way.
“My friends actually think it’s really cool,” she said.
“I spend time time looking and feeling good. I like to feel pretty at work. It helps to keep the mood upbeat,” she said.
Ms Hill said she had done a number of modelling and photo shoots but this would be the first time she had modelled on stage.
“It should be fun. It’s an art form and it’s nice that people can appreciate the time you take to do the make up and take the effort. Doing winged eyeliner is a lot harder than you think. This is a chance to showcase what I do,” she said.
A collector of Elvis memorabilia, Kirsty’s passion for rockabilly culture stems from the romantic imagery of a classic historic era and was spurred on grandfather, himself a collector of antiques.
Entry to the revival is $15 adults, $10 hot rod drivers and children under 16 free.
