THERE will be massive deals for bargain hunters at Cleveland District State High School’s trash and treasure garage sale on Saturday, March 24.
The sale supports the school’s chaplaincy program and efforts to supply books for libraries at schools in Vanuatu.
Chaplain Neale Collier said books, furniture, plants, clothing, electronics, sports equipment, collectables, homewares, toys and games would be on sale at the event.
Volunteers are also sought to help run the sale and donations are needed.
Mr Collier said about a quarter of the money needed to run the chaplaincy program came from fundraising.
“The chaplaincy is a key program, together with other support services, at the school,” he said.
“Every bit of support we gets allows us to open every day and offer help to students.”
Year 12 student and chaplaincy committee member Ashleigh Palin said the chaplains provided a place where students could go if they needed to relax or ask for help.
“Students can get support here and feel welcomed because they won’t be judged,” fellow student Shannon Abernethy said.
Isaac Edwards-Burke said there was a great atmosphere in the room making it a good place for students.
They called on people to donate goods and books, help and support the stalls.
Items that are in a good, clean condition can be dropped off at the Smith Street community hall next to the Redland Museum on Friday, March 23 between 2.30pm and 6.30pm.
Students are also collecting children’s fiction and non-fiction books to send to schools in Vanuatu that do not have access to books.
Mr Collier has facilitated the project with students for years.
“It is part of our global perspectives initiatives,” he said.
“It gives the students an avenue to help others and we have found that building libraries at schools changes peoples’ lives.”
Students and volunteers will be at the hall in Smith Street, Cleveland to sort books on Friday, March 16 from 12 to 6pm and Saturday, March 17 from 8am to 5pm.
Books can be dropped off during those times or marked ‘Vanuatu’ taken during the garage sale.
Furniture and large items can be collected. To make arrangements, phone 3824 9239.
